beat the band 了不起
【講解】
愛爾蘭香農(Shannon)河畔Banaghe鎮是19世紀中期一個臭名昭著的"口袋選區"(pocket borough),當地大多數居民受僱於某個家族, 因而選舉也完全受其控制。當時在英國國會裏一有人提及此類"口袋選區",議員們就俏皮地說,"Well,that beats/bangs Banagher. " 意思是"真了不起,令人驚異"。人們認爲約於1880年出現的beat the band 一語由that beats Banagher演化而來不是沒有理由的,兩者都用了英語中慣用的頭韻法,且beat the band念起來更順口,它的原意是"壓過樂隊的 聲響",轉義爲"了不起,令人驚異";作狀語用時則表示"又快又猛地,起勁地"。
