這句話是由一個故事演變來的。有一天，白人和印第安人去打獵，獵到了一隻火雞和一隻烏鴉。在分獵物的時候，白人對印第安人說“you take the crow and I'll take the turkey or I'll take the turkey and you take the crow.白人只是把一句話顛過來說而已，印第安人說“you never talk turkey to me”從此，talk turkey 就代表說實話的意思。
