校園口語第三十六課:口語當中的ball
① We all wore festive costumes to the ball.
我們都穿着節日的盛裝前去參加舞會。
在這個句子中，ball是“舞會”的意思。
②短語on the ball表示的是“有知識，有才華，辦事利索”等意思。
He is a teacher who is really on the ball. 他是個了不起的老師。
那麼，由此類推，have nothing on the ball就是“沒有才華，辦事不利”的意思了。
a student who has nothing on the ball 學得一塌糊塗的學生
③有時候，我們還會用ball這個詞來指代某件事情或者某個任務，比如：
The ball is in your court now. 現在球已到你那邊了。(言下之意即得由你做決定了)
I am glad you have started the ball rolling. 很高興你把這事推動起來了。
④ 我們知道fireball是“火球”的意思，在日常表達中其實也常常引申爲“成功、熱情、精力旺盛”之意。例如：
I hope John will join us, he is a fireball (or he is a ball of fire). 我希望約翰能加入我們，他是個精力旺盛的人。
⑤ a ball of fortune fortune有“命運”的意思，a ball of fortune就是被命運踢來踢去的球，引申爲受命運擺佈的人，命運多舛的人。例如：
He has been a ball of fortune from his childhood. 從童年開始他就是一個命運多舛的人。
⑥ have (onself) a ball 在口語中是玩得開心，玩得痛快的意思，相當於我們常說的have a good time
