 Underwrite是“寫在下面”的意思嗎？   今天講一個很有用的詞：underwrite 這個詞看起來似乎很簡單，很土氣，簡單粗暴地理解，就是 “寫在……下面” 的意思，似乎沒什麼技術含量對吧？ 但在商務合同中，如果你願意把名字簽在某某文件下面，意思是你願意爲其背書（endorsement）。 所以，在商務英語中，underwrite具有 “擔保，同意資助” 的意思。 If an institution or company underwrites an activity or underwrites the cost of it, they agree to provide any money that is needed to cover losses or buy special equipment, often for an agreed-upon fee. 比如：

The government will have to create a special agency to underwrite small business loans.

政府將不得不建立一個專門機構來爲小額企業貸款提供擔保。

 

to underwrite the expense of ...

爲……提供資金，承擔……的花費

 而在現代商業中，一般做擔保的，就是保險公司，所以 underwriter 就是保險商，保險業者 的意思。 如：claim against the underwriters
      向保險商索賠
