As you slowly open your eyes, look around, notice where the light comesinto your room; listen carefully, see if there are new sounds you can recognize;feel with your body and spirit, and see if you can sense the freshness in theair.

Yes, yes, yes, it’s a new day, it’s a different day, and it’s a bright day!And most importantly, it’s a new beginning for your life, a beginning where youare going to make new decisions, take new actions, make new friends, and takeyour life to a totally unprecedented(空前的) level.

In your mind’s eye, you can see clearly the things you want to have, thepaces you intend to go, the relationships you desire to develop, and thepositions you aspire(勵志) to reach.

You can hear your laughters of joy and happiness on the day when everythinghappens as you dream. You can see the smiles on the people around you when themagic moment strikes. You can feel your face is getting red, your heart isbeating fast, and your blood is rushing all over your body, to every singlecorner of your being!

You know all this is real as long as you are confident, passionate andcommitted!(效忠的) And you are confident, you are passionate, you arecommitted!

You will no longer fear making new sounds, showing new facial expressions, using your body in new ways, approaching new people, and asking newquestions.

You will live every single day of your life with absolute passion, and youwill show your passion through the words you speak and the actions you take.

You will focus all your time and effort on the most important goals of yourlife. You will never succumb(屈服,屈從) to challenges of hardships.

You will never waver(動搖) in your pursuit of excellence. After all, you arethe best, and you deserve the best!

As your coach and friend, I can assure you the door to all the best thingsin the world will open to you, but the key to that door is in your hand. Youmust do your part. You must faithfully follow the plans you make and take theactions you plan; you must never quit and you must never fear. I know you mustdo it, you can do it, you will do it, and you will succeed! Now stand firm andtall, make a fist, get excited, and yell it out:

I must do it! I can do it! I will do it! I will succeed!

I must do it! I can do it! I will do it! I will succeed!

I must do it! I can do it! I will do it! I will succeed!

“Once upon a time, there was a king who had a daughter as beautiful as ablooming rose. To all the suitors who came to the king's palace to ask for thehand of the princess, the old king assigned three tasks to be accomplished, eachnext to impossible. One day, into the king's palace came a handsome youngprince..." Well, you know the rest. The three tasks may be different indifferent versions, but the main plot is always the same, with the princeclaiming the princess's hand triumphantly.

And the ending is always the same, finishing with the line "And they livehappily every after."

Why aren't we tired of something so fanciful, so unrealistic, and, I wouldsay, so unimaginative? How can a story like that endure generations ofrepetition`? Because, I think, it is a typical success story. It is highlyphilosophical and symbolic. By implication, we see a 4-step definition ofsuccess: 1 ) a goal to be set. as represented by the beautiful princess; 2 )challenges to be met, as represented by the three tasks; 3 ) the process ofsurmounting difficulties, as represented by the ordeals the youth goes through;and 4 ) the reward of success, as represented by the happy marriage.

The story not only caters to everyone's inward yearning for success, butalso emphasizes the inseparability of the process and the result. The reward ofsuccess will be much amplified if the path leading towards it is treacherous, and vice versa. If a person inherits his father's millions and leads an easylife, he is not a successful person even in material terms, because there are nodifficulties involved in his achieving affluence. The term "success", to besure. will not sit still for easy definition. But as I understand it, the truemeaning of success entails a combination of both the process and thesatisfactory result of an endeavor. To clarify my view, let me give anotheranalogy.

If we changed the rules of football, greatly enlarged the goal and sentaway David Seaman or any other goal keeper, so that another David, namely DavidBeckham, could score easily, then scoring would not give him the thrill ofaccomplishment and the joy that it brings. If we further changed the rules bynot allowing Arsenal's defenders to defend, so that Beckham needed only to lifta finger, actually a toe, to score, then there would be no game at all, becausethe meaning of winning would have disappeared. In accepting the challenge, insurmounting the difficulties and in enduring the hardship, success acquires itsvalue. The sense of attainment varies in proportion to the degree ofdifficulties on overcomes.

The concept of success is not constant but relative because the nature ofdifficulty is also relative. Something you do effortlessly might pose a greatdifficulty for a handicapped person. In acquiring the ability to do the same asyou can, he or she achieve success. That's why we greatly admire StephenHawking, because, though confined to a wheel chair, he has contributed greatlyto the field of science.

I myself, a rather shy person by nature who easily suffer from stagefright, had to pluck up great courage to take part in a speech contest likethis. I could have stayed away and had an easy time of it by not entering theuniversity level I chose to accept the challenge and to face thedifficulties. Now here I am. If I come out first, it will be a great success forme. If I come out last-I hope this will not be the case-but if I come out last,I will not call my attempt a failure, but will also celebrate it as a truesuccess, because part of my goal is my own character training-to do moreassertive, to be brave in face of difficulties. For me, it is a meaningful stepforward, small as it is, in the long journey toward the final success in mylife, because I have truly gained by participating.

Let us return to our handsome young prince and the 4-step definition ofsuccess. You my have noticed that the usual worldly criteria of wealth, positionand fame were not mentioned as part of the story, but rather, it emphasized theprocess of overcoming difficulties. The ancient wisdom had already defined themeaning of success, and this is my definition, too.

What is success? Different people hold views on This question. Some thinkthat one is successful if he can make a great deal of money. Others argue thatsuccess means holding an important government post. Still others believe thatwhoever has got high academic title is successful. It is clear that there arequite different opinions on success.

In order to become successful, you should first of all be both perseverantand hardworking. As you know, whatever you do, there are always two possibleresults: success and failure. When you fail, you should never lose heart. On thecontrary, you must build up your confidence and work even harder. You shouldalways keep in mind that perseverance is the mother of success and industry isthe key to it. In addition, you should pay great attention to your work is necessary for you to sum up your experience constantly and improve theefficiency of your work. Finally, it is important for you to get along well withyour co-workers, care for each other and help each other. If you follow theseprinciples, you will certainly achieve remarkable success in the future.

In my opinion, success means achieving brilliant results in one’s work, that is, making outstanding contributions to the development of the country andbringing happiness to the people. So my conclusion is that even if one has madegreat progress in what he does, I don’t think there’s any reason for him to beconceited.

Quit making excuses! Making excuses or blaming others for any situation inyour life is nothing more than playing the victim.

Take responsibility! Make your life decisions, and if you don’t, then it’syour fault. You are a spiritual being in a physical body, and your spirit shouldrun your life. Take it back! Make today the day you quit playing the victim bymaking excuses and blaming others for what happens to you.

Quit procrastinating! Cancer is not the most deadly killer; procrastinationis. It kills dreams. It kills your future. Never use the phrase “I’ll try”e is no such thing as trying. Pay attention when others use this phrase:ninety-nine percent of the time they do nothing. The words are just an easy wayto comfort oneself.

Quit thinking self-defeating thoughts! Quit thinking that you can’t do whatyou want to do. It’s not what you are that’s holding you back; it’s what youthink you are. You were given all the equipment you need to accomplish anythingyou desire. Use that power today.

As for bad habits: just quit! Take the challenge. Pick one, and quit itthis week. Next week pick another, and so on. Improve your life by being a“quitter” now.

Who are we? That is the first question. It’s a question that’s almostimpossible to answer.

But we all agree that one’s busy or daily self is not quite one’s realself. We’re quite sure that we’ve lost something in the course of just makingour living.。

A crowd is watching a person running about looking for something in afield, and a wise man asks, “What has that person lost?” Someone may guess awatch, another a diamond ring. When everyone has guessed, the wise man who likeeveryone else there has no idea, says, “I’ll tell you one thing for sure. He’slost some breath.”

And no one can deny that he’s right. The point is that we often forget ourtrue selves in pursuit of things that are external1 to us, like a birdforgetting its own danger in pursuit of a mantis, which in turn forgets its owndanger in pursuit of some other prey.
