Eating plenty of oily fish helps us stay healthy longer, a new study suggests.

The findings, published in BMJ, come from analysis of blood and diet of 2,622 pensioners for up to 22 years.

Those with most omega 3 fatty acid in their blood were 24 percent less likely to suffer chronic diseases or mental or physical impairments than those with the least.

The substance is thought to help regulate blood pressure, heart rate and inflammation.

Researcher Dr. Heidi Lai said: "With rapid aging of populations globally and an increased prevalence of chronic disease, focus on longevity alone is shifting toward an emphasis on healthy aging."
