 Underwrite是“写在下面”的意思吗？   今天讲一个很有用的词：underwrite 这个词看起来似乎很简单，很土气，简单粗暴地理解，就是 “写在……下面” 的意思，似乎没什么技术含量对吧？ 但在商务合同中，如果你愿意把名字签在某某文件下面，意思是你愿意为其背书（endorsement）。 所以，在商务英语中，underwrite具有 “担保，同意资助” 的意思。 If an institution or company underwrites an activity or underwrites the cost of it, they agree to provide any money that is needed to cover losses or buy special equipment, often for an agreed-upon fee. 比如：

The government will have to create a special agency to underwrite small business loans.

政府将不得不建立一个专门机构来为小额企业贷款提供担保。

 

to underwrite the expense of ...

为……提供资金，承担……的花费

 而在现代商业中，一般做担保的，就是保险公司，所以 underwriter 就是保险商，保险业者 的意思。 如：claim against the underwriters
      向保险商索赔
