How much money does a young Chinese worker need to save for retirement?

According to a post that*s gone viral on the Chinese Internet: 3.14 million yuan ($494,000).

The number, which comes from financial planners cited in the Chongqing Morning Post, is based on the assumption that workers born in the 1980s will need 2000 yuan ($315) per month for 20 years to retire comfortably.

China faces a pension crisis as its population ages, and that prospect is starting to alarm Chinese workers who are already struggling to pay for education, healthcare and housing. By the time those people who joined the workforce in the 1980s retire, there will be two workers for every retiree, compared to the current ratio of 6:1, according to Guangdong census last year.

A joint Bank of China-Deutsche Bank study released last month showed that an ageing population will leave China pension funds with a shortfall of 18.3 trillion yuan ($2.89 trillion) by 2013.

Lang Xianpin, a prominent Chinese economist, said it would be extremely difficult for many Chinese people to save enough for their retirement. China is now playing a &Ponzi Game we use pension funds provided by young people to cover the spending of the older generation. When young people retire, there will be no money left for them. It'll be very dangerous, Mr. Lang said in a blog post.

It has been brutal enough to save money to get married. How can we save that much for pension? one Sina weibo user commented, It used to be hard to live decently when we were young, and now it seems that it is even harder to wait for death decently,§ another comment says.

In the past few weeks, the government has floated a number of proposals to deal with the looming pension crunch.

Last month, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security said that an extension of the retirement age is inevitable. The current retirement age in China is 60 for men and 55 for women.

The Ministry is also proposing pension subsidies for parents of only children.

In addition, the government is studying tax breaks for pension funds and may introduce a trial program in Shanghai later this year, the China Securities Journal reported last week, citing unnamed sources.

In an online survey conducted by , 90% of web users objected to a higher retirement age, saying it should be up to each individual whether to work longer.

Meanwhile, Chinese-language newspapers in Canada and New Zealand have reported that more Chinese are migrating to those countries, partly to benefit from their more-generous pension benefits.

Chinese seniors are coming over to enjoy local pension and social welfare benefits. Otherwise, who's willing to travel thousands of miles to leave our homeland behind? reads a comment by an overseas Chinese on a New Zealand blogsite.
