在資訊化社會，充分有效地管理和利用各類資訊資源，是進行科學研究和決策管理的前提條件。資料庫技術是管理資訊系統、辦公自動化系統、決策支援系統等各類資訊系統的核心部分，是進行科學研究和決策管理的重要技術手段。[1]

資料庫，顧名思義，是存入資料的倉庫。只不過這個倉庫是在計算機儲存裝置上的，而且資料是按一定格式存放的。

當人們收集了大量的資料後，應該把它們儲存起來進行進一步的處理，進一步的抽取有用的資訊。當年人們把資料存放在檔案櫃中，可現在隨著社會的發展，資料量急劇增長，現在人們就藉助計算機和資料庫技術科學的儲存大量的資料，以便能更好的利用這些資料資源。

要是下定義的話，就應該是：指長期儲存在計算機內的、有組織的、可共享的資料集合。

資料庫包含關係資料庫、面向物件資料庫及新興的XML資料庫等多種，目前應用最廣泛的是關係資料庫，若在關係資料庫基礎上提供部分面向物件資料庫功能的物件關係資料庫。在資料庫技術的早期還曾經流行過層次資料庫與網狀資料庫，但這兩類資料庫目前已經極少使用。
