Shot最普通的解釋是開槍射擊，然而它用在不同的地方會產生不同的意義。例如在今天要學習的習慣用語裏，shot這個詞的原意是打針。

這個習慣用語是：a shot in the arm。A shot in the arm從字面來看就是在手臂上打一針。我們打針也許是爲了補充營養增強體質，更可能是防病治病。總之，a shot in the arm都是爲了增進健康的。但是習慣用語a shot in the arm卻是作比喻的。

我們聽個例子來領會它的意思。

During the business recession in 2001 the Federal Reserve Board lowered the basic interest rate

almost every month or so to make it easier to borrow money and thus give the economy a needed

shot in the arm.
他說：在 2001年工商業衰退期間，聯邦儲備委員會差不多每個月都降低一次基本利率，以便於借款，以此促使經濟復甦。

利率降低，貸款人能少付利息，有利於企業的運轉，因而可能重振衰退的經濟，所以這段話裏a needed shot in the arm用來比喻促使經濟恢復元氣的必要手段，

a shot in the arm可以指刺激增長的因素，也可以用來指振奮人心的因素，例如在這句話裏：

To this lonely soldier serving overseas, a letter from his wife is a welcome shot in the arm.
他說：妻子的信讓這名在海外服役的孤獨的軍人精神振奮。
