　　1. 表示“家庭”或“家人”，是集合名詞，若視爲整體，具有單數意義，若逐個考慮其個體，則具有複數意義。如：

His family is very large [big]. 他家是個大家庭。

His family are all tall. 他家的人都很高。

側重指家庭成員的 family 有時還可以用 all, some之類的詞修飾。如：

I’m moving to London because I have some family there. 我要搬到倫敦去住，因爲我的一些家人住在那兒。

All my family enjoy skiing. 我全家都喜歡滑雪。

　　2. 有時 family 本身可有複數形式，但它表示的不是家裏的多個人，而是指多個家庭。如：

The meeting between the two families was a joyful one. 這兩家人的聚會十分愉快。

Divorce breaks up a lot of families. 離婚拆散了許多家庭。

　　3. 表示“子女”，也是集合名詞，一般不用複數形式。如：

A：Have you any family? 你有子女嗎?

B：I have a large family. 我子女衆多。

4. 漢語中說“王家”“張家”等，說成英語通常是the Wang family, the Zhang family。比較：

The Brown family lived next to us. 布朗一家住在我們隔壁。

The Browns lived next to us. 布朗一家住在我們隔壁。
