Puppies for Sale待售的小狗
A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.
一位農夫有幾隻小狗要出售。他畫了一個廣告牌子，並把它釘在院子邊的一根柱子上。正當他在敲最後一顆釘子的時候，他覺得有人在扯他的工裝褲。他低下頭，看見一個小男孩。
"Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies."
“先生，”小男孩說，“我想買一隻小狗。”
"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."
“呃，”農夫一邊擦拭着脖子後面的汗水一邊說，“這些小狗都是純種的，所以貴得很啊。”
The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?"
小男孩低下了頭。過了一會，他伸手摸進口袋，掏出了一把零錢，高高地遞到了農夫的眼前說：“我有39分。這樣可以讓我看一眼小狗嗎?”
"Sure," said the farmer.
“當然可以，”農夫說。
And with that he let out a whistle, "Here, Dolly!" he called.
話音剛落，他吹了一聲口哨，喊道：“多利，過來!”
Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.
只見多利從狗屋裏跑了出來，奔下了斜坡，身後還跟着四個小傢伙。小男孩把臉緊緊貼在了鐵絲網上，眼裏跳動着喜悅的神采。
As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared; this One noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little pup began 1)hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up….
這五隻小狗跑過來的時候，小男孩發現狗屋裏還有些動靜。慢慢地，又一隻小狗出現了。這隻小狗明顯弱小得多，他從斜坡上滑了下來，步履蹣跚，努力想趕上同伴們……
"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt.
“我想要那一隻，”小男孩指着那隻弱小的狗崽說。
The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."
農夫在小男孩的身旁蹲了下來說：“孩子，那隻不好。他跑不了，不比其餘幾隻可以陪你玩。”
With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands.".
聽完這番話，小男孩往後退了一步，坐下來，捲起一隻褲腳。只見一隻鋼製的支架護着他小腿的兩側，底部連接着一隻特製的鞋子。小男孩轉過頭，擡頭看着農夫說：“先生，你看，我自己也不太能跑，那隻小狗需要一個理解他的人。”

試金石的故事
When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book; and so a poor man, who could read a little, bought it for a few coppers.
故事從亞歷山大圖書館被付諸一炬開始。有一本書在大火中倖存了下來，但這不是一本貴重的書，一個文化程度並不高的窮人用幾塊銅板把書買了下來。
The book wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of vellum on which was written the secret of the "Touchstone"!
書的內容算不上精彩，但書中夾了一張小紙條，上面的內容還是挺吸引人的——關於試金石的小祕密!
The touchstone was a small pebble that could turn any common metal into pure gold. The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this: The real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles are cold.
試金石是一種能把普通金屬變成純金的小鵝卵石。書中寫道，試金石通常與普通的鵝卵石混在一起，從外表看很難區分出來，但祕訣是當握在手裏，試金石是暖的，而普通鵝卵石則是冷的。
So the man sold his few belongings, bought some simple supplies, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles.
這個窮人變賣了他爲數不多的家產，購買了一些基本的生活必需品，在海邊安營紮寨，開始尋找試金石。
He knew that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble. – Cold. - Throw it into the sea. – Pick up another. – Cold. – Throw it into the days stretched into weeks and the weeks into months.
他知道，如果自己把拾到的普通鵝卵石又放回原地，那他可能會無數次揀起同一塊石頭。於是，一旦撿到冷的鵝卵石，他就把它扔進大海里。就這樣，他撿了整整一天的石頭，也沒碰到一塊試金石。但他不氣餒，依然執著的重複着這套機械的動作——揀起一塊鵝卵石，摸到是冷的，扔進大海里,撿起另一塊，仍是冷的，扔進大海……日復一日，很快幾周過去了，然後幾個月也過去了。
One day, however, about mid-afternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into the sea that when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
然而有一天，大概下午兩三點的時候，他撿起了一塊暖的鵝卵石，但他習慣性地用力把它拋進了大海，等意識到扔出去的是一塊試金石時，已經爲時過晚。他已經習慣了順手把揀起來的每一塊鵝卵石扔進大海，甚至當試金石出現時，也不例外。
So it is with opportunity. Unless we are vigilant, it's easy to fail to recognize an opportunity when it is in hand and it's just as easy to throw it away.
機會也是如此。如果我們不時刻保持警惕，那麼有一天，我們也會很自然地任由手中的大好機會白白溜走。

An elderly carpenter was ready to told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house-building business to live a more leisurel life with his wife and enjoy his extended would miss the paycheck each week ,but he wanted to could get by.
有個老木匠準備退休，他告訴老闆，說要離開建造行業，回家與妻子兒女享受天倫之樂。雖然老闆給他的工資很高，可是，他更想享受退休生活。生活總能維持下去。
The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal carpenter said yes,but over time it was easy to see that his heart was not was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.
老闆很不捨得他的好工人離開，問他是否能幫忙再建一座房子。老木匠答應了。但是大家後來都看得出來，他的心已不在工作上，他使用的是次料，做工也很粗糙。這真是一種令人遺憾的結束自己全心全意所從事的事業的方式。
When the carpenter finished his work ,his employer came to inspect the he handed the front-door key to the carpenter and said,"This is your gift to you."
The carpenter was shocked!
房子建好的時候，老闆前來視察，然後把大門的鑰匙遞給他，說道：“這是你的房子……是我送給你的禮物。”老木匠驚呆了!
What a shame!If he had only known he was building his own house,he would have done it all so differently.
真是丟臉啊!如果他早知道是在給自己建房子，他一定不會這麼應付了事的。
So it is with us build our lives, a day at a time,often putting less than our best into the , with a shock;we realize we have to live in the house we have we could do it over,we would do it much differently.
我們又何嘗不是這樣。我們漫不經心地“建造”自己的生活，不是積極行動，而是消極應付，凡事不肯精益求精，在關鍵時刻不能盡最大努力。等我們驚覺自己的處境，早已深困在自己建造的“房子”裏了。如果能夠重新來過，我們一定不會這麼做。
But, you cannot go are the carpenter,and everyday you hammer a nail,place a board ,or erect a wall,Someone once said,"Life is a do-it-yourself project."Your attitude and the choices you made today,help build the "house"you will live in efore,build wisely!
