The most tantalizing storyline in the NBA, and perhaps in all of sports, unwound Monday in Oakland with discipline, kind words, a striking sense of self-awareness and a lot more caution and humility than when super teams first became a national fixation six years ago with LeBron James and the Miami Heat.

But that doesn't mean the Warriors, fresh off a 73-win regular season that ended with a heartbreaking collapse in the Finals and the off-season addition of Kevin Durant, can expect a smoother ride.

Star turns as ambitious and captivating as the one the Warriors are about to embark on rarely come crisis-free, even if the chances for greatness and glory are very, very high.

"To be quite frank with you," Draymond Green told reporters at the Warriors' media day and unofficial start of the Durant-meets-Warriors spectacle Monday, "I don't even want to win 74 games or 75 games. It's brutal.

There definitely will be bumps in the beginning. It's not going to be all great like people think it will be.

"If we were to start 19-6, and it's the world's coming to an end, and it's, 'KD's a problems because they lost more games in the first 25 games than they did last year.'

I've already prepared myself for that mentally."

Smart man. Because a great culture can only be so much of a firewall against the unique challenge of being the country's most intriguing and scrutinized sports team. Ask Pat Riley and the Miami Heat.

Because a superstar on such a team, fair or not, will be get blamed for things he does not deserve and create crises he will only grasp months or years later. Ask LeBron James.

Because starting 9-8 can almost get a head coach fired, and players thrown so off-balance the repercussions will last well beyond November basketball.

Ask Erik Spoelstra and the guys around him who struggled, despite having the best team in the NBA in 2010-11, to keep the train on the tracks.

This Warriors team could be every bit as interesting, or more, than that Heat team from six years ago.

I was there, I covered that group, and the unifying axis between then and now is threefold:

A rabid curiosity for how this amalgamation of egos and talent and pressure will mix, a superstar making a bold move to a team with extraordinary expectations, and a group capable of so much that anything short of near perfection will be not just a media frenzy but water-cooler talk for fans across the country, day in and day out, without end.

"There's no more pressure than there was last year," Steph Curry said Monday.

"Coming off a championship trying to defend the regular season we had, having a game seven..."

Yes, and no. That pressure must have be intense last year, trying to validate that 73-win season through the Western playoffs and against a possessed LeBron in the Finals, and who are any of us to say otherwise?

We didn't live it. Curry and his teammates did. But the pressure that comes next? That's not something Curry and Co. have seen, firsthand, let alone experienced.

But again, I've been around this sort of hype train, and mark my words: It will take on a life of its own, and everyone else will be required to adjust to it, not the other way around.

In fact, it'a already started. Klay Thompson addressed early on Monday his comments from the summer that he wasn't going to "sacrifice" anything with a reasonable and, for me, believable answer: He'd been misunderstood.

"I'm really not sacrificing anything because you don't sacrifice when you acquire a player like Kevin Durant — and David West and Zaza Pachulia. We got better. That's what I meant by that."

Still, the season hasn't started — media day hadn't even begun — and already this was a big deal.

And in his initial comments, Thompson went straight to feeling disrespected.

Even Durant, the source of much of the soon-to-be-everywhere Warriors hysteria, doesn't get it. Yet.

"I'll approach the game like I've always done it," he said. "Nothing's changed on my end except for my jersey."

Fact is, everything has changed. The lights will shine brighter, and differently, in large part because of what Curry alluded to: What was accomplished last year, and what was lost in that Game 7 loss to LeBron and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

And, of course, because Kevin Durant has been thrown into the mix — an accelerant not just in the potential excellence of this team, but for the social justice questions that will pop up (as they did repeatedly on day one in Oakland), the losses that are inevitable, the struggles large or small that will be part of this team's learning curve, all of it.

Every little moment will be sensationalized, scrutinized, cynically observed in a way they haven't experienced before, not even last season.

To be fair, this Warriors team seems well aware that integrating Kevin Durant into their culture, their approach, their system and their lives will be an uneven process almost certainly worth whatever price there is to be paid or whatever pain comes with the change.

"He's a well-rounded player," Curry said. "He does score the ball at a high rate and can do it all different ways.

But our offense, even before KD, it's about ball movement and player movement and a flow and rhythm.

There's not a lot of standing, not a lot of one-on-one. He can do all of that at a very high level.

"I know he just wants to play the game the right way," Curry continued. "That fits right into our identity.

But there's still obviously a transition. You have to figure out how to blend it all. But everybody has to be 100 percent themselves. When it comes to the full culture of our team it'll take a minute to flow."

Said Green: "There are some things that will have to grow. It will only get better with time.

One thing you can't do is substitute or make up for time. Those things will happen as we're together more."

Exactly. It will take time and it will be hard. And how each and every one of these guys reacts to those struggles — and the weight of a thing they have not yet felt — will dictate how this story ends.
