霍金公開其博士論文 致使網站癱瘓

For the first time ever, influential British scientist Stephen Hawking's doctoral thesis is available to the public -- if you can get the web page to load.

極具影響力的英國科學家史蒂芬·霍金的博士論文，於日前首度對公衆開放--當然，如果你能打開網頁進行下載的話。

In honor of Open Access Week, the University of Cambridge put the 1966 PhD thesis, "Properties of Expanding Universes," on its open access repository. Shortly after it went live, requests to view the research crashed the website.

爲了慶賀開放獲取周，劍橋大學於近日將霍金1966年的博士論文《宇宙膨脹的性質》放在了其開放獲取知識庫上。在論文上線不久之後，瀏覽的請求致使該網站癱瘓了。

"We have had a huge response to Professor Hawking's decision to make his PhD thesis publicly available to download, with almost 60,000 downloads in less than 24 hours," spokesman Stuart Roberts said. "As a result, visitors to our open access site may find that it is performing slower than usual and may at times be temporarily unavailable."

發言人斯圖亞特·羅伯特表示：“在霍金決定對外公開其博士論文下載之後，我們獲得了巨大反響，不到24個小時內下載量近6萬。結果，來我們開放獲取網站的訪客們會發現，網站打開要比平常慢，有時可能臨時無法訪問。”

"It's wonderful to hear how many people have already shown an interest in downloading my thesis -- hopefully they won't be disappointed now that they finally have access to it!" Hawking said in a statement before the website crashed.

霍金在網站癱瘓前發表的聲明中稱：“聽到有這麼多人對於下載我的論文感興趣，這真是太好了--希望他們在獲得後不會失望。”

"By making my PhD thesis Open Access, I hope to inspire people around the world to look up at the stars and not down at their feet; to wonder about our place in the universe and to try and make sense of the cosmos," he said.

Hawking's life, including his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis -- known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease -- was made into a 2014 biopic, "The Theory of Everything," starring Eddie Redmayne
