Mr Humphrey was apparently freed on health grounds and is in a Shanghai hospital having tests relating to cancer.

A court reduced his sentence by seven months and he will be deported on his discharge from hospital, according to one source.

The corporate investigator was detained in 2013 with his American wife and business partner, Yu Yingzeng, who was sentenced to two years in prison in August. She is due for release on July 11 and will be allowed to stay in China, where prison sentences are calculated from the date of initial detention.

The fate of the couple, who were denied a fully public trial and, at some points, full access to lawyers, has shone a spotlight on the risks facing foreign business people in China.

They were detained after helping GSK, which was not mentioned during the trial, identify the source of a secretly filmed sex tape of its then top executive in the country, in bed with his girlfriend.

GSK was fined £300m last year for funnelling billions of renminbi to hospitals, doctors and officials in an attempt to boost sales in one of the world’s biggest and fastest-growing drug markets.

Mr Humphrey and his wife, who ran ChinaWhys, a risk consultancy, were detained for more than a year before being sentenced last August.

The Briton was charged under a 2009 law against obtaining personal information, which carries a three-year maximum sentence. The case has highlighted efforts by Beijing to curb private detectives who help foreign clients navigate Chinese business, part of a broader push by regulators to clip multinationals’ wings.

The Shanghai court dropped plans to hold the proceedings in secret following pressure from the US and UK, which expressed concern about a lack of transparency. Foreign media were barred from the supposedly open trial.
