The seals are used to being aroundhumans and may even come right up and stick their nose on your camera the easy 10-minute Ohau Stream trail located off the South Island'sHighway 1 to witness this natural marvel. It's free, with no security and noguardrails.

Peru's Cocha Salvador Lake is the place to witness the teeniest primates on theplanet. Pygmy monkeys have babies so little (newborns weigh about half anounce) that two can cling to a human's finger. Founder Josh Cohen of WildPlanet Adventures—the only tour operator offering pygmy marmoset expeditions inthe wild—recommends visiting during peak birthing seasons: May and June orNovember through January. Guides are specially trained to locate troops amongthe quassia trees and even have a special call to draw them out.

Twice aday, they come out to play and snack on fresh fruit. Watch from a platform amidthe jungle as they leap overhead, swing on obstacle courses, and monkey aroundwith the caretaker.

The preserveis free and open to the public; head to the Chilkat River between mile markers18 and 24 on Haines Highway to see America's emblematic bird. Their adorable offspring,a.k.a. joeys, can be spotted year round, but opportunities are best duringsummer—November through January—when they come to drink from a nearby freshspring in early morning or late afternoon.

The Brown Bear Center on KarlukLake in the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge offers the island's only overnightviewing tour, along with accommodations.

From December to March, up to 10,000 seals turn up, making the beach sodensely populated that it resembles a blanket of lumpy, brown fur. Moms givebirth to precious pups while bulbous-nosed bulls fight for their right to ity TV pales in comparison to this drama. Naturalist-led walks are offereddaily from December 15 through March 31 (except holidays). Best to makereservations; it's the only way to see the seals during this period. The parkis closed December 1–15 as pregnant females and bulls arrive and form harems.

Although you can only “hug” an adult, the best time tospot their fluffy offspring is February to May, when they emerge from the pouchat six months old. Midday and feeding times are also ideal to witness many ofthe 130 koalas on-site. Fun fact: newborn koalas are the size of jellybeans!

Bring your camera, as photo ops with the scalyyoungsters or their 500-pound adult relatives abound. During the month ofAugust, you can actually hold an egg as the baby hatches.

The three-hourexcursion commences with a cool dip in a candlelit grotto. Nesting season isMay to October.
