I agree that we need to make sure that animals that are used for testing new products have the minimum of suffering. However, I am convinced that animal testing is necessary, and that it will continue to benefit humans in new and wonderful ways.

In conclusion, physical punishment can be a useful method of ver, it should be the last choice for parents. If we want to build a world with less violence we must begin at home, and we must teach our children to be responsible.

To sum up, although there are undoubtedly some problems with increased levels of education,I feel strongly that the country can only progressif all its people are educated to the maximum of their ability.

All in all, although the problem of drugs may seem impossible to eliminate, there are concrete steps that can be taken to weaken the hold of drugs on society. The danger from drugs is too great to ignore.

In short, there are several things that the government can do to allow more people to finish ver, a number of society attitudes also have to changeif the country’s people are to achieve their full potential.

Writing Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

The chart below shows the number of men and women in further education in Britain in three periods and whether they were studying full-time or part-time.

Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below.

You should write at least 150 words.

The most prominent trend shown in the graph is an enormous rise in the number of people traveling to and from work by car in the 40 years from 1950 to 1990. In the same period, there was a steep drop in the numbers of people riding bicycles or walking. In addition, the trend was accompanied by a slight decline in the number of bus users.

In 1950, only about 5% of all commuters used cars. This shot up to over 25% in 1970, and to about 30% in 1990. The number of foot travelers halved in both 20-year periods successively, and bike riders followed suit. The use of buses rose sharply until 1970, and then declined to somewhat lower than its former level over the next 20 years.

The graph suggests that people are becoming less active. In 1950, most people traveled to and from work in th is city either on foot or, to a slightly lesser extent, by bike. But by 1990, cars were by far the most popular mode of transport, and almost as many people were still traveling by bus in 1990 as in 1950, with very few using bikes or walking.

Writing Task 2

Many people are optimistic about the 21st century and see it as an opportunity to make positive changes to the world. To what extent do you agree or disagree with their optimism? What changes would you like to be made in the new century?

Many people are optimistic about the twenty first century and see it as an opportunity to make positive changes in the world.(注意:這句話照抄了原題,考試時這樣做會被扣分的!) Given(作介詞,表示“考慮到”) current trends however this optimism is certainly unwarranted. If we are to see our way safely into the twenty second century, many fundamental changes still need to be made.

The world has been changed in the twenty first century; advancements in medicine and technology have changed life and lifestyles for virtually all of the peoples of the world. Not only have these advancements brought society forward, it has brought society onto the cusp of a new era(新紀元的開始), the entire direction of human development is now changing from that of single nations eking out an existence(很好的短語,表示“勉強維持生活”)in some corner of the world, to the people of the world drawing together(團結起來) to take on projects and research that could never be accomplished in isolation.

These changes however, have not all been positive. The environmental impact of industrialization has changed the face of the world as well, polluting oceans and rivers, stripping (剝奪)the world of some of its oldest and most verdant forests (綠色森林)darkening the sky with air pollution, poking holes in the protective ozone layer, and leading to the development of radioactive poisons(放射型毒物) capable of poisoning the earth and continuing to poison it for millions of years to come. Meanwhile, man is beset by(被困擾) problems of overpopulation and pollution. Like vermin, man is being overcome by his own filth and inability to stop reproducing.

Man’s development in the last century has been massive, but in both directions, both forward and backward. This combination of development and destruction seems to be the basic nature of man, but if we are to survive, we must realize that progress, at the cost of ourselves is not only unacceptable but the path to destruction.
