1. 解詞釋義
Salt是我們日常生活中最常見的調味品，很多人會把“鹽”和“貴賓”聯繫在一起。其實，salt是在古代是貴重的商品，羅馬士兵都會領到專門用來買鹽的補貼，後來這種貼金就叫做salary。到了伊麗莎白時代，鹽仍然被視爲珍品，王公貴族們的餐桌前都擺着一個很大的鹽罐，貴賓們坐在鹽罐的上首（above the salt），而普通客人，窮親戚都坐在離鹽罐較遠的地方（below the salt）。因此，above the salt就有了“坐上席，受尊重”的意思。其反義詞則是below the salt，意思是“坐下席，被小看”。
