Has Neil won the London marathon? Or has he just been to the cinema? Who can you trust? It seems that someone's been giving false information... Learn a useful phrase about lying in the programme.

尼爾贏得了倫敦馬拉松冠軍?還是去電影院了?你能相信誰的話?看起來有人給出了錯誤的信息。請通過今天的節目學習這個有用的短語。

Helen: Hello and welcome to The English We Speak. I'm Helen and joining me today is Rob.

海倫:大家好,歡迎收聽地道英語節目。我是海倫,今天和我一起主持節目的是羅布。

Rob: Hello. Hey, have you heard Neil's good news?

羅布:大家好。嘿,你聽說尼爾的好消息了嗎?

Helen: No, what's that?

海倫:沒有,什麼好消息?

Rob: Well, he ran in the London Marathon and he came first!

羅布:他參加了倫敦馬拉松,而且拿到了冠軍!

Helen: That's impossible.

海倫:這不可能。

Rob: Well I know it's hard to believe but he has been training very hard and he's quite a fast runner.

羅布:我知道這很難相信,不過他一直在努力訓練,他跑得非常快。

Helen: Sorry Rob — he's lying through his teeth — he went to the cinema on Sunday!

海倫:抱歉羅布,他這是在睜眼說瞎話,他週日去電影院看電影了!

Rob: Oh, did he really? Well, you've just used a perfect phrase — 'to lie through your teeth' — it means to tell someone something that's completely untrue.

羅布:哦,真的嗎?你剛剛用到的那個短語的意思是告訴別人某件事完全不是事實。

Helen: That's why I said it! So he's giving you false information.

海倫:這就是我爲什麼這麼說的原因!他告訴你的是錯誤的信息。

Rob: Yes, I'm going to have words with him — but before I do, let's hear some more examples of this phrase...

羅布:好吧,看來我得和他談談了,不過在那之前,我們再來聽幾個有關這個短語的例句

Examples

例句

When she said she was nearly 30 years old, I knew she was lying through her teeth!

她說她已經快30歲時,我知道她是在睜眼說瞎話!

They promised we'd get free drinks every day at our hotel but they were lying through their teeth.

他們的承諾是,我們每天都能在酒店獲得免費飲料,可是這根本是他們的滿口謊話。

He lied through his teeth when he said he bought her an expensive engagement ring — it was just a cheap one from the catalogue.

他說他給她買的是昂貴的訂婚戒指,他根本是在睜眼說瞎話,那戒指是商品目錄中最便宜的那種。

Helen: So, 'to lie through your teeth' means to say something that's false. Neil was telling an outrageous lie, I can't believe you fell for it.

海倫:所以這個短語的意思是說某件事是假的。尼爾撒了個彌天大謊,我不敢相信你竟然信了。

Rob: Well actually, it was me who was lying through my teeth. Neil didn't tell me he'd won the marathon — it was a trick to find out where Neil really was on Sunday — and now you've told me — he was at the cinema on his own! Thanks very much.

羅布:其實,睜眼說瞎話的是我。尼爾並沒有跟我說他贏得了倫敦馬拉松的冠軍,這只是我爲了知道尼爾週日去了哪裏而耍的一個小手段,你已經告訴我他去哪裏了,他自己去了電影院!非常謝謝你告訴我。

Helen: Well, to be honest, he wasn't alone at the cinema — he went with me but we forgot to invite you. Sorry!

海倫:說實話,他並不是自己去的電影院,他是和我一起去的,可是我們忘了邀請你一起去。抱歉!

Rob: You liar!

羅布:你說謊!

Helen: It was just a little white lie — a lie that's told just to avoid upsetting someone.

海倫:這只是一個善意的謊言,善意的謊言是指爲了避免讓某人感到不快而說的謊話。

Rob: Well it hasn't worked. I'm off. Good bye!

羅布:可是這並沒有什麼用。我走了。再見!

Helen: Oh dear, Rob.

海倫:親愛的羅布。
