China Riveted By Sordid Diary
A diary allegedly written by a local tobacco official filled with details of his sexual trysts, bribe collecting and drunken meals is riveting China with salacious revelations of government corruption.
It's unclear if the posting really represents the writings of Han Feng, who worked in the tobacco monopoly bureau in southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
But state media quoted officials appearing to confirm the accuracy of the diary's accounts and said that Han was suspended from his job pending investigation. The controversial diary was still available on China's tightly controlled Internet, despite the seamy revelations.
Communist officials often cite corruption as one of the greatest threats to social stability and their continued ability to rule and there are frequent high-profile crackdowns.
The spectacular account comes just as the government is trying to focus attention on the annual two-week meeting of the National People's Congress, when some 4,000 delegates descend onto Beijing for the largely rubber stamp legislative session. Official propaganda goes into overdrive projecting an image of a democratic-minded, corruption-fighting, transparent government.
That image was undercut by the alleged diaries, which include unusually frank and graphic descriptions of routine bribe-taking and affairs with subordinates, who are identified by their real names. Some newspaper accounts claim the diary was posted by the revenge-seeking husband of one of Han's lovers. It's unclear how the husband got the diary.
Under the date and weather conditions, the diary entries were terse and to the point. On Dec 29, 2007, Han wrote: '2007 has been a good year. Work is going smoothly. Income is as high as 200,000 yuan Womanizing is on the right track. It's been a lucky year with women. I need to pay attention to my health with so many sex partners.'
Indeed.

目前尚不清楚被人發佈到網上的這份日記是否真爲廣西壯族自治區菸草專賣局官員韓峯所寫。
但從國有媒體所引政府官員的話看，他們似乎證實了日記所記內容的準確性。這些媒體還說，韓峯已停職接受調查。儘管這份引發廣泛爭議的日記披露了很多醜陋面，但在中國控制嚴密的互聯網上仍可以找到。
共產黨官員經常將腐敗稱爲對社會穩定和共產黨持續執政能力的最大威脅之一，中國經常大張旗鼓地報導一些反腐行動。

在註明日期和天氣狀況後，韓峯的每篇日記簡潔扼要、直入主題。他在日期標註爲2007年12月29日那天的日記中寫道：2007年一直不錯。我工作更順手了。收入高達20萬元。玩女人上，終於玩了。今年真是交了桃花運。女人多了就是要注意身體。
