The Hungry Moths
Poor hungry white moths
That eat my love’s clothing,
Who says very soon
Ye’ll leave her with nothing,
Here under the moon
I make bold to persuade ye,
Ye may eat all her clothes
So ye leave me milady,
Poor hungry white moths.
飢餓的蛀蟲
飢餓的白色可憐蛀蟲,
啃起我愛人的衣裳;
她不禁發起牢騷:
“我的衣服很快就要吃光。”
月夜裏我鼓起勇氣,
勸說蛀蟲們放開食量:
你們可以吃掉她所有的衣服,
給我留下一個最時髦的女郎。

衣裳被蛀蟲啃食,愛人發起牢騷,這原本是一件讓人懊惱的事情。可是在這首詩中,詩人竟然背地鼓動蛀蟲們去吃光她所有的衣裳,讓她成爲一個時髦女郎。在親暱的調侃中,詩人對那種 “衣服穿得越少越露越時髦” 的觀點加以辛辣地諷刺:一絲不掛就是最時髦的女郎。這種親暱的調侃與辛辣的諷刺,切中時弊而又妙趣橫生。
