On the edge: Tourists risking their lives for the "perfect photo"
"I MISS you.like crazy and cannot ever put into words how much I love you."
These are the heartbreaking words from a friend of UK backpacker Zoe Woolmer, who fell to hear death at Kings Canyon in the Northern Territory last month.

While the circumstances surrounding her death remain unknown, many tourists have diced with death at the same spot by taking “cliff hanging” photographs.

Her tragic story serves as a warning to other tourists about the dangers of popular tourist destinations.

From the hugely popular Machu Picchu in Peru and America’s Grand Canyon, it’s an unfortunate reality that some of the world’s greatest wonders have claimed lives.

These places become even more dangerous for those who may be distracted while taking photographs. While some venture near the edges of cliffs, others walk next to massive, overpowering waterfalls, unaware that others who’ve gone before them have ended up stepping into disaster in the same spot.

Travel Insurance Direct’s Phil Sylvester has issued a warning to travellers not to take risks while snapping away.

“Australia is often accused of being a nanny state with lots of regulation to try to keep us safe,” he told . “In many countries the reverse is true — the individual is expected to be responsible for their own safety, so you won’t find warning signs or fences and such.

“At the very heart of the travel insurance arrangement is an undertaking by us to cover you for unexpected things, and for you to not put yourself needlessly at risk. Stepping over the safety fence at the Grand Canyon to get that shot is breaking that contract ... you’re putting yourself in harm’s way.”

Here are some tourists spots that have claimed lives, or pose a risk to travellers taking photos. Ultimately, while there’s no doubt that everybody loves a good holiday snap — just one glance at it sends euphoria rushing back through your veins as you recall that moment when you were free, soaking up a new culture and exploring some incredible sights — it’s not worth putting your life in danger.

Kings Canyon, Northern Territory

Following Zoe Woolmer’s death at the rugged, 270m-high Kings Canyon in remote Central Australia, and the revelations that many tourists have posed too close to the edge of the cliff, local guides told the NT News that safety fences will be inevitable.
Former Canyon tour guide Shane Woods said: “Despite my opposition to changing the natural scenery, the overall nature of people when they go there is to take that photo near the edge. As they will continue to do it a safety barrier is probably best for all involved, similar to other trails, like the Blue Mountains in Sydney.”

Cape Douglas, South Australia

Also in Australia, a 30-year-old woman died while trying to take a photograph of the rocky shore at Cape Douglas, near Mount Gambier, in 2010. She slipped and fell 50m down the cliff face.

The Grand Canyon is a spectacular and popular spot, with a dark history. In fact, it’s estimated that more than 700 people have lost their lives here, according to the Arizona Daily Sun.

On average, 12 people die every year at the famous canyon from various causes. Of the 18 deaths already recorded this year, two were from falling over the rim.

Just last week a US tourist who was hiking the canyon died. It came amid a search for another tourist who reportedly fell from a ledge into the Colorado River during a rafting trip.

According to the Arizona Daily Sun , tourists have been killed there while hunting for a great holiday snap. Most were men: “Of 55 who have accidentally fallen from the rim of the canyon, 39 were male. Eight of those guys were hopping from one rock to another or posing for pictures, including a 38-year-old father from Texas pretending to fall to scare his daughter, who then really did fall 121 metres to his death.”

Machu Picchu

The ancient city of Machu Picchu lies at the top of the Inca Trail, which has become known as the “hike of death”.
Unfortunately, that’s because it has claimed lives. Last January American tourist Rachel Gian, 26, died after falling into a ravine near the popular tourist spot. It follows the death of 73-year-old Werner Grimpen along the Inca Trail after a section of rocks came loose.

While there’s no suggestion they were taking photos when they fell, Machu Picchu guides frequently warn people that tourists have plummeted to their deaths — or been severely injured — while trying to take the perfect snap.

Dolno Dragliste, Bulgaria

British tourist Kathryn Williamson-Stockwell plunged to her death while taking a photo of a grasshopper during a holiday near Dolno Dragliste in Bulgaria in 2008. Her husband Trefor had reportedly warned her minutes earlier to be careful because it’s renowned for being a dangerous spot.

Victoria Falls, Africa

Occasional deaths have been reported here, including a case in 2009 a tour guide was killed after plunging 90m into the falls while trying to rescue a tourist on the edge of the falls. Many tourists pose for photos while very close to the edge.

Pulpit Rock, Norway

A Spanish tourist became the first to die at the 600m-high Pulpit Rock in Norway in 2013 when he fell off the edge. There’s still no safety barrier, with authorities concerned installing one could actually end up encouraging risky behaviour. Caution is needed.
