外表紅彤彤的西紅柿，捏起來硬邦邦的，切開後籽是綠的，吃起來像是沒長熟；黃瓜通身碧綠帶刺，“身板”筆直，頂上還有一朵小黃花……這些被催熟的蔬菜在各地菜場隨處可見。令人擔憂的是，催熟劑的使用處於監控盲區，其有無害處仍無權威說法。

Expressing concern over the spurt in cases of artificial ripening of fruits using chemicals, the health ministry Thursday asked the states to take action against those indulging in the hazardous practice.
印度衛生部週四表達了對使用化學制劑人工催熟水果激增的擔憂，並要求各邦採取措施，制止濫用催熟劑的危險行爲。
文中的chemical ripening就是指“催熟”，也就是artificial ripening by using chemicals，也可以稱爲forced ripening。進行催熟的化學制劑就是ripener／ripening agent（催熟劑）。和ripener類似，之前發生的“西瓜爆炸”是因爲使用了swelling agent（膨大劑），agent在這裏指的就是化學制劑。
ripe在這裏表示瓜果的成熟，夏天買西瓜，有時買到的只是half-ripe（半生不熟），一點兒都不甜。Ripe還可以用來指抽象的“成熟”，比如The time is not yet ripe.（時機尚未成熟。）但ripe old age則指的是“高齡、晚年”。
