中國南部深圳市一家法院週一宣佈，中國研究員賀建奎因非法實施人類胚胎基因編輯實驗並使三名基因編輯嬰兒出生而被判處有期徒刑三年，並處罰金人民幣三百萬元（約43萬美元）。

南山區人民法院表示，法院審理查明，2016年以來，南方科技大學原副教授（former associate professor）賀建奎得知人類胚胎基因編輯技術（human embryo gene-editing technology）可獲得商業利益（obtain commercial benefits），即與廣東省某醫療機構張仁禮、深圳市某醫療機構覃金洲共謀，在明知違反國家有關規定和醫學倫理（violate state regulations and medical ethics）的情況下，仍以通過編輯人類胚胎CCR5基因可以生育免疫艾滋病的嬰兒（give birth to babies immune to HIV virus）爲名，將安全性、有效性未經嚴格驗證（without verifying the safety and effectiveness）的人類胚胎基因編輯技術用於輔助生殖醫療（assisted reproductive medical treatment）。
賀建奎等人僞造倫理審查材料（forged ethical review documents），招募男方爲艾滋病病毒感染者（HIV-infected）的多對夫婦實施基因編輯及輔助生殖，以冒名頂替、隱瞞真相的方式，由不知情的醫生將基因編輯過的胚胎（edited the genes of the embryos）通過輔助生殖技術（assisted reproduction technology）移植入人體內（implanted the embryos back into human bodies），致使2人懷孕（pregnant），先後生下3名基因編輯嬰兒（gene-edited babies）。
法院認爲，3名被告人未取得醫生執業資格（not qualified），追名逐利（in pursuit of profits），故意違反國家有關科研和醫療管理規定（violated national regulations on scientific research and medical management），逾越科研和醫學倫理道德底線（crossed the bottom line of scientific and medical ethics），貿然將基因編輯技術應用於人類輔助生殖醫療，擾亂醫療管理秩序（disturbed the order of medical management），情節嚴重，其行爲已構成非法行醫罪（constituted the crime of illegal medical practice）。
根據3名被告人的犯罪事實、性質、情節和對社會的危害程度，依法判處被告人賀建奎有期徒刑三年（three years in prison），並處罰金人民幣三百萬元；判處張仁禮有期徒刑二年，並處罰金人民幣一百萬元；判處覃金洲有期徒刑一年六個月，緩刑二年（a two-year reprieve），並處罰金人民幣五十萬元。
因涉及有關人員個人隱私（personal privacy），法院不公開開庭審理了此案（heard the case in private）。
