話說以前有的鄉下人會把貓裝在布袋裏冒充小豬去賣，沒有經驗的人就上當了。但如果是老練的買主，他就會把袋子打開，讓貓鑽出口袋，騙局也就被戳穿了。所以let the cat out of the bag比喻泄露祕密或說漏嘴。根據這則習語，又派生出了另外一則習語：The cat is out of the bag.意思是祕密已經泄露，真相已經大白。比如：
