sit tight這個說法是來自撲克牌遊戲，有的時候，一個參加遊戲的人本可以繼續玩，但是他放棄叫牌的機會而選擇觀望的態度，形容“不採取任何行動，耐心等待、堅持主張、靜待事態的發展”。現在我們常用這個習慣用語告誡人們：“不要着急，請耐心等待”。因此，當美國人說"Sit tight, please."時，他/她要表達的意思就是:"Wait patiently, please."、"Hold your horses, please."。
